I. Searching for Medical Literature

1. PubMed

II. Endnote Software

1. Introduction to Endnote

  • Endnote is a database management software that helps store and manage lists of citations/references.
  • Endnote is developed by Thomson Reuters.

2. Main Functions of Endnote:

  • Store, manage, and search for references
  • Export data for storage in online services and databases
  • Directly cite references in Word files.

3. Keyboard Shortcuts in Endnote:

  • Ctrl + O: Open existing library
  • Ctrl + N: Enter information for a new reference
  • Ctrl + G: Open the URL to the online document or file on your computer
  • Ctrl + F4: Close the data entry window
  • Ctrl + Y: Spell check
  • Ctrl + W: Close a file (library)
  • Ctrl + S: Save data
  • Ctrl + Q: Close Endnote
  • Ctrl + E: Edit information for a new document
  • Ctrl + Shift + W: Close all open libraries
  • Ctrl + F: Search for a library

4. Concepts in Endnote:

  • Eln: File extension of the Endnote library file.
  • DOI (Digital Object Identifier): A unique identifier for identifying a version of a document.
  • ISSN (International Standard Serial Number): An identifying code that identifies a journal as a whole, such as a medical journal.
  • Keywords: Words that describe the topic of the document.
  • Abstract: A summary of the document’s content.

5. Basic Operations in Endnote:

  • Create a new library: Select File/New
  • Open an existing library: Select File/Open Library or press Ctrl + O
  • Enter information for a new reference: Select References/New Reference or press Ctrl + N
  • Create a new group: Select References/Group/Create new group
  • Add reference information to the group: Select References/and Reference to.
  • Use the Endnote manuscript template in Word: Select Tools/Manuscript templates/Open
  • Remove Endnote field codes from the finished text file: Select Convert Citations and Bibliography/Convert to Plain Text
  • Remove text connections to the Endnote file: Select Convert Citations and Bibliography/Convert to Plain Text
