IV Fluids for Hydration

IV fluids are used to rehydrate the body in cases of dehydration due to:

  • High fever: When you have a fever, your body loses fluids through excessive sweating.
  • Severe diarrhea: Diarrhea leads to fluid and electrolyte loss through stool.
  • Excessive vomiting: Vomiting results in fluid and electrolyte loss through stomach contents.
  • Dehydration with increased electrolyte concentration in blood and body fluids: In this case, the body requires simultaneous fluid and electrolyte replenishment.

For patients experiencing dehydration, a doctor may prescribe the following IV fluids:

  • 5% glucose, 5% fructose, 2.5% glucose with 0.45% NaCl: This solution helps to rehydrate and provide energy to the body.
  • 5% glucose with 0.2% NaCl: This solution helps to rehydrate and balance electrolytes in the body.

Note: IV fluid administration should be done under the guidance of a physician. Patients should not self-administer IV fluids at home.
