Phthisis – Tuberculosis: Recognition & Traditional Medicine Treatment

Constitutional Weakness (CW) is a condition of nutritional deficiency leading to emaciation.

CW Diagnosis: Lasts continuously for more than 6 months, does not subside with rest, and is not related to other diseases.

Phthisis: A disease state due to long-term decline in organ function without recovery.

People susceptible to Phthisis:

  • Those with congenital deficiency
  • Those with chronic illnesses
  • Those recovering from severe acute illness
  • Those living in difficult circumstances
  • Those receiving inappropriate treatment

Causes of Phthisis according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM):

  • Constitutional weakness
  • Excessive labor
  • Irregular diet

Five Phthisis: Heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney phthisis – spirit, blood, essence, qi, jing.

Phthisis with Qi Deficiency:

  • 2 forms: Lung Qi deficiency and Spleen Qi deficiency

Phthisis with Lung Qi Deficiency:

  • Common in patients with chronic respiratory failure due to COPD, bronchiectasis, chronic heart failure.
  • Symptoms: Shortness of breath, weak pulse.

Treatment approach for Lung Qi deficiency: Tonify Qi and consolidate the exterior.

Herbal formula for Lung Qi deficiency:

  • Bufei Tang / Baoyuan Tang

Lung Qi deficiency with spontaneous sweating:

  • Use the formula Jieji San

Effect of Jieji San: Tonify Qi, consolidate the exterior, and stop sweating.
