Syndrome of Lung Qi Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: Fatigue, weak cough, weak and soft voice, increased dyspnea with exertion, spontaneous sweating, fear of cold, pale complexion.
  • Tongue: Pale tongue coating.
  • Pulse: Weak pulse.
  • Method: Tonify lung and replenish Qi.
  • Formula: Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction).
  • Distinctive Symptoms: Cough, dyspnea, weak and soft voice, fatigue, fear of cold.
  • Treatment Method: Tonify Qi and protect the exterior.
  • Formula: Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Screen Powder).

Syndrome of Lung Yin Deficiency:

  • Symptoms: Dry cough, dyspnea, scanty sputum but sticky or mixed with blood, blood streaks.
  • Additional Symptoms: Dry mouth and throat, hoarse voice, emaciation, afternoon fever, night sweats, restlessness with a hot sensation in the palms and soles, red cheeks.
  • Tongue: Dry red tongue coating.
  • Pulse: Fine and rapid pulse.
  • Method: Nourish yin and moisten lung.
  • Formula: Bai He Gu Jin Tang (Hundred Unity Decoction).
  • Distinctive Symptoms: Dry cough, dyspnea, scanty sputum, dry mouth and throat, hoarse voice.

Syndrome of Wind-Cold Invading the Lung:

  • Symptoms: Cough, dyspnea, expectoration of thin white phlegm, no thirst, nasal congestion, clear nasal discharge, fear of cold, fever, headache, and body aches.
  • Tongue: White tongue coating.
  • Pulse: Tight pulse.
  • Method: Clear lung and dispel cold.
  • Formula: Xing Tou San (Peppermint Decoction).
  • Distinctive Symptoms: Cough, dyspnea, thin white phlegm, fear of cold, mild fever.

Syndrome of Wind-Heat Invading the Lung:

  • Symptoms: Cough, dyspnea, coarse breathing, expectoration of thick yellow phlegm, thirst, sore throat, fever, slight aversion to wind, fear of cold, chest pain, constipation, scanty, yellow urine.
  • Tongue: Red tongue coating with yellow fur.
  • Pulse: Rapid pulse.
  • Method: Clear heat and open the lung, arrest cough and subdue asthma.
  • Formula:
  • Mild: Tang Ju Yin (Tangerine Peel Decoction)
  • Severe: Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang (Ma Huang Stone Camphor Decoction)
  • Distinctive Symptoms: Cough, dyspnea, thick yellow phlegm, thirst, high fever.

Syndrome of Phlegm-Dampness Accumulating in the Lung:

  • Symptoms: Cough with abundant phlegm, white and sticky, easy to expectorate, chest tightness and dyspnea, phlegm rattling.
  • Tongue: Coated tongue with white and sticky phlegm.
  • Pulse: String-like and rapid/slippery and slow.
  • Method: Dry dampness and transform phlegm.
  • Formula: Er Chen Tang combined with San Zi Tang (Two Ginseng Decoction combined with Three Herbs Decoction).
  • Distinctive Symptoms: Cough with abundant phlegm, chest tightness, dyspnea.

Note:

  • Deficiency Syndromes: Lung Qi Deficiency, Lung Yin Deficiency.
  • Excess Syndromes: Wind-Heat Invading the Lung, Wind-Cold Invading the Lung, Phlegm-Dampness Accumulating in the Lung.
